“I’m so glad we’re going home!” Philip beamed, the early morning sun shining in his eyes. “I can’t wait to see Alec.” He loaded the Jeep up with his luggage. The back lot of the hotel was eerily quiet.

“I missed the big lug, too,” Max said. Jai gave her a kiss on the neck, then took the bags from her hands, approaching the Jeep.

“It’s a nice little town,” Jai said, “but I’m ready to go and see our awesome mountains and forests again.”

“Thing’s are gonna get a little crazy now,” Philip said to them.

“You can say that again.” A voice called from behind them.

They turned slowly to see two young men staring them down. Fangs peeked from beneath their lips.

“None of you are the white wolf,” the taller one said. “You’re not even shifters.”

The shorter one, with tattoo sleeves, growled: “The white wolf isn’t here! That’s his mate.” He pointed at Philip. “But the wolf was never here. Was he, humans?”

The taller shifter leapt into the air and came down on the hood of Philip’s Jeep. He let loose a swift kick and caught Philip in the chin, sending him down. Philip writhed on the asphalt, pain shooting through his head, his back aching. The shifter climbed off the Jeep and crawled onto the prone Philip, clasping his throat with a clawed hand.

“Where’s your boyfriend now?” The shifter snarled into Philip’s face, spittle escaping his lips and teeth.

Jai soared across the lot, throwing himself onto the shifter and tearing him off Philip. The two of them rolled across the lot as Max screamed.

The short werewolf came to his buddy’s aid, hauling Jai up and hurling him onto the ground. Jai let out a bellow and scrambled to get to his feet, the wind nearly knocked out of him. Philip jumped up and attempted to throw a punch, but the shifter caught it, squeezing his hand hard.

“How about I bite your hand clean off?” the shifter hissed as he transformed, gaining muscle and height, black fur spreading across his body. He shoved Philip backwards.

The taller shifter joined his side and changed into his wolf form, red fur sprouting, massive claws curling. Max rushed him, swinging some luggage, but he dodged it and backhanded her, sending her down.

“Max!” Jai screamed. “Stay back! Get away from her, you bastards!”

The wolves turned their attention back onto the boys.

Jai grabbed Philip and the two men backed up, hitting the hotel wall behind them. The werewolves closed in, huffing, teeth gnashing, eyes enflamed with yellow fire.

Philip saw Alec’s face flash before his eyes. He wished he could tell him one last time that he loved him. He waited for the inevitable. Jai trembled beside him, grabbing onto him.

An engine roared suddenly and Max screeched toward both werewolves. She plowed into them with the Jeep, crushing them both, sending their broken bodies across the lot. The two wolves fell hard, rolling to a stop, unmoving.

“No one chows down on my boys,” Max said.

A smile grew across Philip’s face.
